Millaa MillaaBeautiful Millaa Millaa, one of the most photographed sites in the entire region, nestles in emerald hills surrounded by dairy farms and a circuit of waterfalls. Its lookout presents the most expansive views of the entire region, and Millaa Millaa Falls, a bridal waterfall surrounded by lush rainforest, is an indelible image captured by thousands of visitors every year. After the first expIorers - Christie PaImerston and his Aborigina I friend Pompo who share a monument in the town square - it was the timber-getters of the 1920's who opened up the Millaa Millaa region. A chiropractor from Sweden, Ernest Kjellberg, arrived in the 1930's and attracted legions with his reputation as a healer. His property at times resembled a tent city with as many as 500 devotees camped on site. The region's dairying industry is its mainstay however, and the spectacular waterfalls have been a constant attraction throughout. The area has more than its share of innovations. It was one of Australia's first to produce excellent cheese, sending overseas the first export consignment to be certified '100% choice grade'. In 1970, it held the record for the world's longest milk run, supplying Darwin daily. Today, the science of dairying has expanded to encompass Queensland's first buffalo dairy, Ambrose, which makes mozzarella and boccocini cheese. This is made and sold at Mungalli Creek's Bio-Dynamic Dairy where you can buy the Mungalli brand of fresh dairy products, watch them being made, and sample them at the Out of the Whey teahouse. The town's main street has a life size artwork of a farmer pushing a reluctant cow into a dairy bale, and the region's history is well documented by the local historical society in the town's museum. WaterfallsThe picturesque waterfalls have been attracting visitors to Millaa Millaa for over a century. At the turn off just south of town is The Fails Teahouse, a gracious building that ofers accommodation, morning and afternoon teas and information to the many visitors who take the waterfall circuit. The most popular circuit begins here at Teresa Creek Road encompassing Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie and Ellinjaa Falls. Further down the Palmerston Highway is Mungalli Falls, then the road continues to Wooroonooran National Park, home to Ycaupala and Nandroya Falls. The locals have developed a Polar Bear certificate which is available to those who have braved the bracing waters ofMillaa Millaa Fails. Ask at local businesses - including the Falls Teahouse - for your copy! AccommodationThe Millaa Millaa area has private B&B's and guest accommodation is available at The Fails Teahouse which is a delightful spot for morning and afternoon teas. Acton Ridge Farmstay is a great option for families - the children will love the atmosphere and the animals.
